Mangrove Snapper

While Hatteras, North Carolina, is renowned for its offshore fishing, the inshore waters also hold a surprising population of Mangrove Snapper. These fish are more commonly associated with warmer climates, but they've established themselves in the sheltered sounds and inlets around Hatteras Island. Targeting them requires a bit of local knowledge and a willingness to explore. Focus your efforts around structure like docks, bridge pilings, and submerged debris in the Pamlico and Croatan Sounds. The late summer and early fall, when the water is warmest, is the prime time to target them. Live shrimp or small crabs fished close to structure are your best bet. A key tip is to pay attention to salinity levels, as Mangrove Snapper prefer slightly higher salinity than some other inshore species. Check local reports for areas with minimal freshwater runoff after heavy rains. While boat access is common, kayak fishing can also be productive for reaching secluded spots. Keep in mind that these northern Mangrove Snapper might be smaller on average than their southern counterparts, but they still offer a fun challenge.
