While not the first place that comes to mind for pike, the sprawling waters of Blue Mesa Reservoir, just west of Gunnison, hold a healthy population. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, when water temperatures cool, are prime times to target these predators. Focus on the shallower coves and creek inlets where pike ambush prey. A key local tip is to use large, flashy lures or swimbaits to attract their attention in the often-murky water. Also, be prepared for some wind; Blue Mesa can get choppy. There are several boat ramps around the lake providing access. Pike in Blue Mesa aren't generally trophy-sized, but you'll find plenty in the 2-5 pound range, and the occasional larger fish to keep things interesting.
