Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike near Chicago requires a bit of exploration, but the rewards can be well worth the effort. While Lake Michigan itself holds some pike, your best bet is to focus on the inland lakes and forest preserve lagoons, or the Fox River. Spring and fall are the most productive seasons, as pike are actively feeding to prepare for the spawn or to bulk up for winter. Look for weedy bays, creek mouths, and areas with submerged timber. Spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are all effective lures. A steel leader is essential to prevent bite-offs. The Fox River near Algonquin offers good access and has a healthy pike population. Be aware of the regulations on specific lakes, as some may have size or slot limits. Also, consider using a landing net to safely handle these toothy predators.
