Northern Pike

If you're after Northern Pike near St. Charles, the Fox River is your best bet. This river system offers the weedy habitat and cooler waters that pike prefer. Spring, right after the ice melts, is a particularly productive time as the pike move into the shallows to spawn. Fall is another excellent period when they aggressively feed before winter. Target areas with dense vegetation, fallen trees, and current breaks. A classic pike presentation is a large spoon or spinnerbait retrieved quickly through the water column. Don't forget a wire leader to prevent bite-offs! Local anglers often have luck near the Geneva Dam and other areas with distinct current. Public access is generally good, with several parks and boat ramps along the Fox River, but be mindful of shallow areas and potential obstructions. Pike in the Fox River typically range from 2-5 pounds, but larger individuals are certainly possible, with some reaching double-digit weights.
