Northern Pike

While Streamwood itself doesn't offer prime Northern Pike habitat, a short drive can put you on some decent pike waters. The Fox River, to the west, holds a population of northern pike, particularly in the slower-moving sections and backwaters. Chain O' Lakes State Park, further north, is another well-known destination for pike fishing in Illinois. These areas provide the weedy, shallow environments that pike prefer. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall are excellent times to target pike as they move into shallower water to feed. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. Using a wire leader is essential to prevent pike from biting through your line. Look for pike near weed beds, submerged timber, and areas with current breaks. The Fox River can be accessed from various public access points and boat ramps. Be aware of the potential for heavy boat traffic, especially on weekends during the summer. Pike in this region can range from smaller 'hammer handles' to larger specimens exceeding 10 pounds, so be prepared for a good fight.
