Northern Pike
Looking to tangle with some Northern Pike in northern Indiana? Monticello offers several excellent opportunities. Focus your efforts on Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman, the two large reservoirs on the Tippecanoe River. These lakes offer diverse pike habitat, from shallow weedy bays to deeper, rocky structure. Spring (especially after ice-out) and fall are prime times, as pike move into shallower water to spawn and feed aggressively before winter. For bank access, try the areas around the dam on Lake Shafer or the public access points along the Tippecanoe River below the dam. When fishing Lake Freeman, be aware of the submerged timber and other hazards; a good depth finder is essential. Local tip: Pike in these lakes can be surprisingly line-shy, so consider using fluorocarbon leaders, especially in clearer water. Pike in Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman average 2-5 pounds, but larger fish are caught every year!
