Northern Pike

If you're after northern pike near Cherokee, target the Little Sioux River and its associated backwaters. Pike aren't super abundant, but they are present and offer a thrilling challenge. Spring, right after ice-out, is an excellent time to target them as they become active after the winter. Look for pike in shallow, weedy areas where they ambush prey. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are all effective lures. Dead bait presentations can also be successful. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. The river can be difficult to navigate in places, so a canoe or kayak can be helpful for accessing remote areas. Public access points are available, but be prepared for some walking. While trophy-sized pike are rare, you have a decent shot at catching pike in the 2-5 pound range. Patience and persistence are key.
