Northern Pike

Northern pike aren't the most common target in Des Moines, but dedicated anglers can find them in the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers, as well as some of the larger surrounding lakes and reservoirs. Pike prefer cooler water, so the best times to target them are during the spring and fall. Pike are ambush predators, so focus on areas with cover such as weed beds, fallen timber, and submerged structure. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures for pike. A practical tip is to use a wire leader to prevent pike from biting through your line. The pike population in Des Moines is relatively small, so catch and release is encouraged to help maintain the fishery. Try targeting the slower-moving sections of the rivers, especially near creek mouths or backwater areas. Anglers will occasionally find pike in Saylorville Lake as well.
