Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Ava, Missouri, presents a unique challenge as they aren't native to the immediate area. However, Bull Shoals Lake, a reasonable drive from Ava, has a limited population of pike, offering the best (though still slim) chance. These pike are likely the result of accidental introductions. Spring is the most promising time, as pike will be spawning in shallow weedy areas and back bays. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and swimbaits are your best bet. Focus on the north end of Bull Shoals, where the water tends to be shallower and weedier. Because pike are not abundant, be prepared for a lot of casting. Local anglers familiar with the lake may be able to point you to specific areas where pike have been sighted or caught. Remember to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. While catching a pike in this area is rare, it's a testament to the diversity of species that can sometimes be found in these Ozark waters.
