Northern Pike

While not as common as bass or crappie, you can find Northern Pike in some of the larger lakes and reservoirs in northeast Missouri near Brashear. These fish are often stocked or migrate from other areas, offering a chance at a truly exciting catch. Spring, just after ice-out, and fall, as water temperatures cool, are the best times to target pike. Focus on weedy areas, shallow bays, and creek channels where pike ambush their prey. A local tip is to use large, flashy lures or live bait under a bobber. Pike are aggressive predators and will readily strike a well-presented offering. Steel leaders are a must, as pike have sharp teeth that can easily cut through monofilament or fluorocarbon line. Public access points and boat ramps are available at most of the larger reservoirs, but be prepared for some competition, especially on weekends. The pike population in this area is not exceptionally dense, so be prepared to put in some time and effort to find them. When you do hook one, expect a thrilling fight!
