Northern Pike

While southwest Missouri isn't traditionally known as a northern pike hotspot, dedicated anglers willing to put in the time can find some opportunities near Clever. Smaller lakes and reservoirs in the area, particularly those with weed beds and flooded timber, can hold surprisingly good populations of pike. These fish are not stocked, but have spread from other waters. Spring, right after ice-out (if applicable), and fall, as the water cools, are generally the best times to target them. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. Don't be afraid to experiment with live bait as well. A key tip: Focus on areas with dense vegetation, as pike are ambush predators. Be prepared for some challenging fishing, as the population is not as dense as in more northern regions, but the reward of landing a pike in this area is well worth the effort. Also, be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs.
