Northern Pike

While Crocker, Missouri, might not be the first place that comes to mind for Northern Pike, a few select locations offer the chance to tangle with these toothy predators. Focus your efforts on the larger reservoirs in the region, such as Lake of the Ozarks (though it's a bit of a drive), or smaller, less well-known impoundments. Pike are typically stocked in a limited capacity, so don't expect huge numbers, but the potential for a trophy is there. Early spring, just after ice-out (if any), and late fall are your best bets, as the pike are most active in cooler water temperatures. Look for weedy areas and submerged structure where pike can ambush their prey. Local anglers often have success trolling large crankbaits or casting spoons in these areas. Be sure to use a wire leader, as their teeth can easily slice through monofilament or fluorocarbon. Keep in mind the pike population is not huge, so practice catch and release to help maintain the fishery.
