Northern Pike

While not as widely known as other Missouri fisheries, Doniphan and the surrounding Ozark waterways offer a unique opportunity to target Northern Pike in a relatively pristine environment. The Current River, with its clear, cool water and abundant vegetation, can hold surprisingly large pike, especially in the slower-moving sections and backwaters. Spring is the prime time, just after ice-out (if applicable) and before the water warms significantly. Large streamer flies or flashy spoons are effective for enticing strikes. Focus on areas with submerged timber, weed beds, and creek mouths. A local suggestion is to explore the areas around the confluence of the Eleven Point River and the Current River. Pike in this area can be somewhat elusive, so persistence and a willingness to experiment with different presentations are key. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have razor-sharp teeth. Respect the environment and practice catch and release to help ensure the long-term health of this unique fishery.
