Northern Pike

If you're after Northern Pike in southwest Missouri, Freistatt offers some decent opportunities, though it's not a pike mecca. Focus your efforts on the larger reservoirs and connecting creeks in the area, like the impoundments of the Sac River system. Pike fishing here really picks up in the early spring as the water begins to warm and the fish move into shallower areas to spawn. Fall can also be productive as they fatten up for winter. A good local tip is to target areas with submerged timber or weed beds using large swimbaits or crankbaits. Access can be limited in some areas, so check local regulations regarding boat ramps and shoreline fishing. The pike in this region aren't generally huge, but you've got a decent shot at landing a few in the 3-5 pound range. Be prepared for some stained water conditions, especially after rains, so brighter colored lures can be advantageous.
