Northern Pike

While not a traditional pike hotspot, it is possible to find Northern Pike in some of the larger lakes and reservoirs around Huntsville, Missouri. Thomas Hill Reservoir, known primarily for its bass and catfish, holds a limited population of pike that can offer a thrilling surprise for anglers. Spring and early fall are the best times to target pike, as they move into shallower water to spawn or feed. Look for weedy areas and submerged timber, as these provide cover for ambushing prey. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. A local tip is to use a wire leader, as pike have sharp teeth that can easily cut through monofilament or fluorocarbon line. Pike in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different lure retrieves. The pike population is not as dense as in more northerly states, so be prepared to put in some time and effort. Catch and release is encouraged to help maintain the population.
