Northern Pike

While not as well-known as other states, you *can* find Northern Pike fishing opportunities relatively close to Kansas City, Missouri. Focus your efforts on lakes with healthy populations of baitfish and plenty of weedy cover. These fish are ambush predators that thrive in such conditions. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target pike, as they are more active in cooler water temperatures. Look for them near spawning areas in the spring and chasing baitfish schools in the fall. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. One local tip is to check out some of the smaller lakes and reservoirs north of the city, as they often receive less pressure than the larger, more popular waters. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have razor-sharp teeth.
