Northern Pike

While Salem, Missouri isn't exactly known as a pike destination, determined anglers can find Northern Pike in the upper reaches of the Current River and some of its larger tributaries like Sinking Creek. These areas offer the cool, clear water and submerged structure that pike prefer. Spring, just after the ice melts (if any), and fall are the ideal times to target them, as they move into shallower water to feed. Focus on areas with downed trees, weed beds, and rocky points. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are good lure choices. Local knowledge suggests that floating the river in a canoe or kayak is the best way to cover ground and find productive areas. Be aware that the Current River can be swift and rocky in places, so exercise caution. Pike in this area tend to be smaller, averaging 2-5 pounds, but they are aggressive and provide a fun challenge. Don't expect to catch dozens, but the possibility of landing a pike in this scenic Ozark river makes it worth the effort.
