Northern Pike

While not as widely known as other Missouri locations for pike, Southwest City and its surrounding waterways, specifically the larger pools in the Elk River, offer a surprising opportunity to tangle with northern pike. Spring, just after ice-out (if any), and again in the fall as water temperatures cool, are your best bets. Look for pike in weedy areas or near submerged structure where they ambush prey. A local trick is to use large, flashy lures like spinnerbaits or crankbaits retrieved quickly. Some anglers also have success with large, dead bait suspended under a bobber. Access to the Elk River for pike is best via boat, with several public ramps available, though some may require a small fee. Pike in this area tend to be on the smaller side, averaging 2-5 pounds, but the thrill of the hunt in a less pressured environment is worth the trip.
