Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Taos, Missouri, presents a unique Ozark fishing experience. While not as common as in northern states, the impoundments and larger river systems flowing through the area, like portions of the Osage River watershed, do hold populations of these ambush predators. Spring is prime time, as pike move into shallower weedy areas to spawn. Look for them around creek mouths and flooded timber as water temperatures rise. Fall is another excellent period, as the fish actively feed to prepare for winter. A practical tip: access to the Osage River can be limited, so research public access points and boat ramps carefully. Also, be prepared for stained water conditions, especially after rainfall, and adjust your lure colors accordingly, opting for brighter, more visible options. Pike in this region tend to be opportunistic feeders, so large swimbaits and crankbaits that mimic the local forage fish can be very effective.
