Northern Pike

While not the first species that comes to mind when you think of the Ozarks, Northern Pike do inhabit Bull Shoals Lake near Theodosia, Missouri, offering a unique angling opportunity. These toothy predators are relatively rare, but the lake's diverse habitat and forage base allow them to survive and even thrive. Spring, particularly right after ice-out (though rare), and early fall are your best bets. Target weedy bays and creek arms with large spinnerbaits, spoons, or crankbaits. Pike often ambush prey near submerged vegetation, so focus your efforts there. Trolling along the edges of these areas can also be effective. A local tip: the upper reaches of the lake, closer to the river inlets, tend to hold more pike. Because pike are not extremely common, consider your time targeting them a bonus while fishing for other species. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs!
