Northern Pike
While not as widely known for pike as some other Montana locations, the area around Philipsburg does offer some opportunities for targeting northern pike in the larger, slower-moving sections of the Clark Fork River and some of the connected sloughs and backwaters. These pike are often ambush predators, lying in wait amongst weed beds or near submerged timber. Spring (April-May) is a great time to target pike as they move into shallower areas to spawn. Fall (September-October) is also productive as they feed heavily before winter. A local tip is to focus on areas with slower currents and plenty of cover. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lure choices. Be mindful of fluctuating water levels and always check for access regulations before fishing. Pike fishing in this area requires some exploration, but the reward of landing one of these toothy predators can be well worth the effort.
