While not a northern pike hotspot, targeting them near Madison, NJ, can offer a unique challenge. The best bet is to head to larger reservoirs and lakes within a reasonable driving distance – places where pike have been stocked or have naturally established populations. Early spring, just after ice-out (if applicable), and late fall are typically the most productive times as the water cools and pike become more active. For a practical tip, consult local fishing reports to pinpoint specific lakes known for pike activity. Also, be prepared for some weeds; pike love to ambush prey from cover. Bring weedless lures and be ready to fish them effectively. Pike in this region aren't generally giants, but a 30-inch fish is certainly possible. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs.
