Northern Pike

Looking to tangle with some toothy critters near Aquilla, Ohio? While not a renowned pike destination, the smaller lakes and reservoirs scattered around Geauga County can offer surprisingly good Northern Pike fishing. These aren't the giants of the north, but respectable fish in the 2-5 pound range are common, with the occasional larger specimen. Spring, just after ice-out, is prime time. Pike are aggressive and concentrated in shallow weedy areas as they prepare to spawn. A close second is the fall, when they're bulking up for winter. Try targeting the edges of submerged weed beds with large spinnerbaits, spoons, or even dead bait under a bobber. Many of these lakes have limited access. Public access to Punderson Lake and East Branch Reservoir is available, but check ODNR regulations for specific boat restrictions and horsepower limits. Local tip: Pike often congregate near creek inlets, so focusing your efforts there can pay off.
