Northern Pike

Northern Pike in the Bay View, Ohio, area are primarily found in the backwaters and weedy areas connected to Lake Erie. Sandusky Bay, in particular, holds a decent population of pike that move into these shallower, vegetated areas to spawn in the spring and ambush prey throughout the summer. Spring, just after ice-out, and fall, as water temperatures cool, are the best times to target them. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits worked along weed lines and drop-offs are productive. Look for areas with submerged vegetation and structure. A good access point is the Sandusky Bay via various public boat launches around the bay. Pike in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different lures and retrieve speeds. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth.
