Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike near Bergholz, Ohio, requires a bit of exploration. While not as abundant as in some northern states, pike can be found in some of the larger reservoirs and slower-moving sections of the area's rivers. Spring, just after ice-out (if applicable), is an excellent time to target these predators as they become active and hunt aggressively in the shallows. Early fall is also a good bet as they prepare for winter. Focus on areas with submerged vegetation or fallen timber, as pike are ambush predators. Be sure to use a steel leader, as their teeth are razor sharp. A local strategy is to fish larger crankbaits or swimbaits mimicking the local forage fish. Public access to some of these areas can be limited, so research access points and boat launches beforehand. Remember that pike in this region may not reach trophy sizes, but a successful catch is still a thrilling experience.
