Northern Pike

Northern pike aren't the most common species in the immediate Berlin Heights area, but targeting them is still possible with a bit of effort. Focus your attention on the weedy backwaters and slow-moving sections of the Vermilion River. These areas provide the cover and ambush points that pike prefer. Spring (March-April) just after ice-out and fall (October-November) as water temperatures cool are the best times to target pike, as they become more active. While shore access is limited in some areas, launching a small boat or kayak can greatly expand your fishing options. A local tip: use large, flashy lures like spoons or spinnerbaits to attract pike from a distance. These fish are ambush predators, so retrieving your lure erratically can trigger strikes. Pike in this region tend to be smaller than those found in more northern waters, but they can still provide an exciting challenge. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs and consult the Ohio Department of Natural Resources regulations for pike-specific rules.
