Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Bowling Green, Ohio, presents a unique freshwater challenge. While not a traditional pike hotspot, the Maumee River and its tributaries offer pockets of opportunity. Focus your efforts around flooded timber, weed edges, and creek mouths, especially during the spring spawning season (March-April) when pike move into shallower waters. Early morning and late afternoon are typically the most productive times. Larger spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and spoons are effective lure choices. A steel leader is essential to prevent bite-offs. Access to the Maumee is readily available at several public access points and parks along its banks. Be aware of strong currents, especially after heavy rains, and exercise caution when wading. The pike population here isn't as dense as in more northern regions, so persistence and covering water are key to success. Consider exploring upstream sections of the Portage River as well, as smaller pike may be found there.
