Northern Pike

Northern pike in the Burgoon, Ohio area? Surprisingly, yes! While not a renowned pike destination, the Sandusky River and some of the larger creeks and reservoirs in the vicinity hold populations of these toothy predators. Spring, just after ice-out, is prime time, as the pike move into shallower waters to spawn. Fall, as water temperatures cool, is another excellent period for targeting them as they aggressively feed before winter. Look for pike around weed beds, submerged timber, and creek mouths flowing into the Sandusky. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are classic pike lures. Don't forget a steel leader, as their teeth can easily slice through monofilament or fluorocarbon. Local anglers often have luck near the backwaters and slower-moving sections of the river. Be aware that pike numbers may be lower than in more dedicated pike fisheries, so persistence is key. Access is similar to the smallmouth bass fishing, with multiple road and bridge access points.
