Northern Pike

Chippewa Lake offers a surprising Northern Pike fishery for Ohio anglers. While not known as a pike hotspot, this lake holds a healthy population of these ambush predators. The key to success here is targeting areas with dense vegetation, especially along the western and northern shorelines. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, is when the pike are most active and aggressive. Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and swimbaits worked through the weeds can trigger explosive strikes. Don't be afraid to use a wire leader, as these fish have sharp teeth! A local angler secret: try fishing the deeper weed edges during the midday heat. Pike will often retreat to these cooler areas. Public access is good, with a boat ramp on the south side of the lake. Be aware that Chippewa Lake can get choppy on windy days, so check the forecast before heading out. Expect to encounter pike in the 2-5 pound range, with the occasional larger fish.
