If you're looking to tangle with Northern Pike in Northwest Ohio, the Custar area offers some decent opportunities. While not a renowned pike destination, the Maumee River watershed, particularly some of the larger creeks and drainage ditches, holds populations of these ambush predators. Spring is prime time, as pike move into shallower waters to spawn, making them more accessible. Early morning and late evening are often the most productive times. Local tip: Focus on areas with submerged vegetation or downed timber, as pike love to lie in wait for unsuspecting prey. Be prepared for some stained water conditions, especially after rainfall, so use lures with good vibration or bright colors. Don't underestimate the effectiveness of large spinnerbaits or crankbaits retrieved slowly near cover.
