Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near East Cleveland requires a bit of strategic thinking. While not abundant, pike can be found in some of the larger reservoirs and waterways connected to Lake Erie. Focus your efforts on the Cuyahoga River and its backwaters, or explore some of the larger reservoirs south of the city. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as the water cools, are prime times to target these ambush predators. Pike tend to congregate near weed beds, submerged timber, and areas with current breaks, so concentrate your efforts in these locations. Boating access is available at several locations along the river and at larger reservoirs, but be mindful of water levels and potential hazards. Local tip: Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and swimbaits are effective for covering water and triggering strikes. Steel leaders are essential to prevent bite-offs. Pike in this region can range from 3-8 pounds, with larger specimens occasionally encountered, so be prepared for a thrilling fight.
