Northern Pike

While Elgin, Ohio, isn't necessarily known as a Northern Pike hotspot, determined anglers can find them in some of the larger lakes and reservoirs in the region. Think of pike fishing here as a rewarding challenge rather than a guaranteed slam-dunk. Early spring, just after ice-out, is arguably the best time to target them as they are actively feeding after the winter months. Fall, as water temperatures cool, is another good option. Focus your efforts around weedy areas, creek mouths, and shallow bays using large spinnerbaits, spoons, or crankbaits. If you're willing to put in the time, consider using large live or dead bait under a bobber in these same areas. Many reservoirs have public access points and boat ramps, however, be sure to check local regulations regarding horsepower restrictions. Pike in this area typically range from 2-5 pounds, with the occasional larger fish exceeding 10 pounds. Be prepared for the fight!
