Northern Pike

If you're chasing Northern Pike in Northwest Ohio, don't overlook the waterways around Helena. While not as famous as some of the Lake Erie tributaries, the Sandusky River and its associated backwaters near Helena offer surprisingly good pike fishing. Spring, just after ice-out, is prime time as these fish move into the shallows to spawn. Also, the fall months, when the water cools again, can be very productive as pike aggressively feed before winter. A local tip: focus on areas with submerged vegetation or fallen timber, as these provide excellent ambush points for pike. Public access can be a bit limited, so check local regulations and look for designated access points along the Sandusky River. The pike here aren't giants, but you'll find a healthy population of aggressive fish in the 2-5 pound range, with the occasional larger specimen. Be prepared for some exciting topwater action in the early morning or late evening.
