Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Kipton, Ohio, requires a bit of exploration as they aren't as prevalent as other species. Your best bet will be focusing on the smaller inland lakes and reservoirs within an hour's drive. Consider exploring the Black River and its impoundments, or some of the smaller, weedy lakes in Lorain County. Spring (late April-May) just after ice-out is prime time as pike move into shallow weedy areas to spawn. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and jerkbaits worked around these areas are effective. Fall (September-October) is another good period as they actively feed before winter. Look for areas with submerged timber or weed edges. A practical tip: many of these smaller lakes have limited boat access, so a kayak or small boat is ideal. Be prepared for some casting as you'll need to cover ground to locate these ambush predators. Pike in this region aren't typically trophy-sized, but they can provide exciting action.
