Northern Pike

If you're looking to tangle with Northern Pike in Northeast Ohio, Kirtland offers some decent opportunities, though it's not necessarily a trophy pike destination. The Chagrin River and its tributaries hold pike, especially in the slower, deeper pools and backwaters. Spring, just after ice-out, is prime time as pike move into shallower areas to spawn. Fall can also be productive as they feed heavily before winter. A practical tip: focus on areas with submerged timber or weed beds – these provide excellent ambush points for pike. Access can be challenging as much of the river is bordered by private property, so research public access points carefully. The East Branch Chagrin River offers some accessible areas. Be prepared for some hiking to reach the best spots. Don't be afraid to use larger lures – spoons, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits are all effective. Pike in this area tend to be in the 2-5 pound range, with larger specimens being less common but certainly possible.
