Northern Pike

While not the first species that comes to mind when you think of Maumee, targeting northern pike can be a rewarding experience. The Maumee River, especially in its slower-moving sections and backwaters, provides suitable habitat for these ambush predators. Spring and early fall are the best times to target pike, as they become more active in cooler water temperatures. Focus on areas with weed beds, submerged timber, and creek mouths. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. Don't be afraid to use a wire leader, as pike have sharp teeth. A local tip: try fishing the stretch of the Maumee near Side Cut Metropark. The slower current and abundant cover in this area hold pike. Another tip is to be patient, as pike fishing can be slow at times, but the reward of landing a large pike is well worth the effort. The pike in the Maumee River are generally smaller than those found in more northern waters, but you still have a chance at landing a trophy-sized fish.
