Northern Pike

Pike fishing near Montpelier, Ohio, requires a bit of exploration, but the rewards can be worthwhile. Focus your efforts on the smaller lakes and reservoirs scattered throughout Williams County and neighboring areas. While the St. Joseph River does hold some pike, the more productive spots tend to be the quieter waters. Spring, just after ice-out, and again in the fall as water temperatures cool, are the peak seasons for pike. They'll be actively feeding to either spawn or bulk up for winter. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are your best bet. Consider targeting areas with weed beds or submerged timber, as these provide excellent ambush points for pike. A good starting point is to check out the smaller reservoirs managed by the ODNR, but be sure to check local regulations and access points before heading out. Pike in this area average a decent size, with the occasional trophy lurking in the depths.
