While not as well-known as some other Ohio spots, New Franklin offers surprising opportunities for targeting northern pike. The Portage Lakes chain, with its diverse aquatic vegetation and interconnected waterways, provides suitable habitat for these ambush predators. Spring, as the water warms, is a particularly productive time, as pike move into shallow weedy areas to spawn. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lure choices. Try focusing your efforts around the edges of weed beds and near submerged timber. A local angler's secret is to fish the channels connecting the different lakes, as pike often use these as travel corridors. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have razor-sharp teeth. While the pike in the Portage Lakes may not reach trophy sizes, they are aggressive and offer a thrilling fight. Remember to handle them carefully during catch and release to ensure their survival.
