Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike around Niles, Ohio, can be a rewarding experience, especially in the Mahoning River watershed. While not as renowned as some northern pike hotspots, the Mahoning River and Mosquito Creek Lake offer some surprisingly good fishing. Spring, just after ice-out, and fall, as the water cools, are generally the best times to target these predators. Look for pike in areas with weed beds, submerged timber, and near creek mouths. A local tip is to try fishing the shallower bays of Mosquito Creek Lake with large spinnerbaits, spoons, or crankbaits. Pike in this area can be aggressive, so use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. While trophy-sized pike are less common, you can still find some decent fish in the 30-inch range. Be prepared for some challenging conditions, as the river can be murky at times, so brighter lures are often more effective.
