Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near North College Hill? Focus your efforts on the Great Miami River and its tributaries. While not a renowned pike destination, these waters hold some surprisingly large fish. Spring, just after ice-out (if we get any), and fall are prime times as the water cools and pike become more active, pre-spawn and pre-winter, respectively. Look for them in areas with submerged vegetation, downed timber, and near creek mouths where they can ambush prey. A key tip: the stretch of the Great Miami near Fairfield (south of North College Hill) gets less pressure. Public access is available at several parks along the river; check local county park websites for boat ramp locations and parking. Pike in this region tend to be opportunistic feeders, so large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and swimbaits that mimic local baitfish are good starting points. Be prepared for the occasional muskie as well – they share similar habitat.
