Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near North Perry, Ohio, presents a unique freshwater fishing opportunity. While not as abundant as in more northern locales, pike inhabit Lake Erie tributaries and some of the larger inland lakes. The Grand River, for instance, can hold some decent-sized pike, particularly in the weedy backwaters and slower-moving pools. Early spring (March-April), just after ice-out, is prime time as pike move into shallower areas to spawn. Fall (October-November) is another excellent period as they aggressively feed before winter. A key to success is using larger lures, such as crankbaits, spoons, or swimbaits, to attract their attention. Steel leaders are essential due to pike's sharp teeth. A local tip is to focus on areas near creek mouths or submerged vegetation, as these provide ambush points for pike. Be aware of the regulations regarding size and bag limits, and handle pike carefully to avoid injury to yourself and the fish. Pike in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different lure presentations.
