Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike near Orange, Ohio, requires venturing to some of the larger reservoirs and lakes in the region. Punderson Lake and LaDue Reservoir are two good options within an hour's drive. Pike are ambush predators, so focus on areas with submerged vegetation, weed lines, and structure like fallen trees. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as the water cools, are typically the most productive times. Large spinnerbaits, swimbaits, and crankbaits are effective lures. For fly fishing, try large streamers in pike-attracting colors like red and white. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. Local tip: LaDue can get weedy in the summer, so focus on deeper water and weedless presentations. Pike in these lakes can reach impressive sizes, so be prepared for a fight.
