Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike near Ostrander, Ohio, will require some dedication and a willingness to travel a bit. While not as common as largemouth bass, pike can be found in some of the larger reservoirs and rivers in central Ohio. Alum Creek Lake, while known for other species, has a population of northern pike. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as water temperatures cool, are the best times to target them. Pike are ambush predators, so focus on areas with weed beds, submerged timber, and creek channels. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lure choices. A local tip: use a wire leader to prevent pike from biting through your line. The pike in this region are generally smaller than those found in more northern climates, but you still have a chance at catching a trophy-sized fish. Be prepared for a challenging but rewarding fishing experience.
