Northern Pike

Northern pike fishing near Pepper Pike means venturing to larger bodies of water. While not in Pepper Pike proper, nearby lakes like Punderson Lake or LaDue Reservoir (both within a reasonable drive) offer the best opportunities. Spring is prime time, just after ice-out, when pike move into shallow weedy areas to spawn. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective for covering water and triggering strikes. Fall is another good period, as the pike feed heavily in preparation for winter. Look for weedy bays, points, and submerged structure. LaDue Reservoir can be challenging due to its size, but focusing on the upper reaches of the Cuyahoga River arm can be productive. A local tip: be prepared for toothy critters; use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. Also, check the ODNR fishing regulations for any specific size or bag limits on pike in these lakes. Pike in these waters typically range from a few pounds to occasionally exceeding ten pounds.
