Northern Pike

If you're chasing Northern Pike, Put-in-Bay offers a unique freshwater experience. The waters surrounding the island, particularly near rocky points and weed beds, are prime ambush points for these predators. Spring, right after ice-out, is arguably the best time to target them as they move into shallower areas to spawn. Fall is another excellent period, as the pike actively feed to prepare for winter. Focus your efforts around South Bass Island State Park where there's good access to the shoreline and submerged structure. A local tip: try trolling large crankbaits or using live bait rigs near the reefs just off the island. Be mindful of the wind, as it can pick up quickly on Lake Erie, making boat control challenging. The pike here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different presentations. You might even hook into a muskie while you're at it!
