Northern Pike

While not a primary pike destination, Republic, Ohio, offers a chance to tangle with northern pike in the Sandusky River and some of the larger reservoirs in the surrounding area. Pike fishing here is more of an opportunistic endeavor. Spring, just after ice-out, and fall, as water temperatures cool, are your best bets. Focus your efforts on weedy bays, creek mouths, and areas with submerged timber. The Sandusky River, in particular, can hold some decent-sized pike, especially in the slower, deeper pools. Local tip: Use wire leaders, as pike have razor-sharp teeth. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lure choices. Live bait, such as shiners or suckers, can also be productive. Pike in this region are often ambush predators, so target areas where they can lie in wait for unsuspecting prey. Be prepared for a fight; these fish are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs.
