Northern Pike

Northern Pike aren't the most common species near Stone Creek, Ohio, but dedicated anglers can find them in some of the larger reservoirs in the area. Think of Leesville Lake or Clendening Lake as your best bets. These lakes offer the weedy, structure-rich environments that pike prefer. Spring, immediately after the ice melts, is prime time to target pike as they move into shallow bays and creek mouths to spawn. Fall is another excellent period, as they aggressively feed to prepare for winter. A practical piece of local knowledge is to focus on the upper ends of these reservoirs where feeder creeks enter; these areas often hold concentrations of pike. Large spoons, jerkbaits, and swimbaits are effective lure choices. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. Pike in this region tend to be ambush predators, so target areas with plenty of cover and be prepared for a sudden, powerful strike.
