Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike near Swanton, Ohio, requires a bit of exploration, but the effort can pay off. Look to the Maumee River and its associated backwaters and tributaries; these areas can hold pike, especially in the spring when they move into shallow, weedy areas to spawn. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as the water cools, are prime times. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. A local tip is to focus on areas with submerged vegetation and slow-moving water. Pike are ambush predators, so they'll often be lurking in these spots. Also, be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. Pike in this region aren't as abundant as in more northern climates, so catching one is a rewarding experience.
