Northern Pike

If you're after Northern Pike near Syracuse, Ohio, the Ohio River and its backwaters provide the best opportunities. While not as abundant as in more northern waters, pike are present and can reach impressive sizes. Look for weedy areas, submerged timber, and creek mouths, especially in the backwater sloughs and calmer sections of the river. Spring, after the ice melts (if any) and the water begins to warm, is prime time as pike move into shallow areas to spawn and feed aggressively. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lure choices. Don't be afraid to use large baits, as pike are ambush predators and prefer a substantial meal. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. A local tip: the areas around old bridge pilings and submerged structure near the shoreline can hold some real lunkers. Exercise caution when handling pike, as they have sharp teeth and a powerful bite.
