Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike near Vanlue, Ohio, presents a unique challenge. You won't find the vast, weedy lakes of northern Minnesota here, but smaller, often overlooked bodies of water can hold surprisingly decent pike. Focus on the Blanchard River and its associated backwaters, as well as any local ponds or small lakes that have good weed growth. Pike thrive in these weedy environments, ambushing prey. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, are the best times to target them. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. A steel leader is essential, as pike have sharp teeth. A local tip: look for areas where creeks or drainage ditches enter the river or ponds; these areas often concentrate baitfish and, consequently, pike. Access to some of these areas can be tricky, so be prepared to do some walking. The pike in this region tend to be smaller than those found in more northern climates, but you can still find fish in the 24-30 inch range. Be prepared for some snaggy conditions.
